FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO POOR LISTENING IN LEARNERS
1. DISTRACTIONS
External distractions, such as noise in the environment, electronic devices or personal worries, can divert learners' attention away from listening effectively
2. LACK OF FOCUS
Learners may struggle with maintaining focus and concentration particularly when the material being presented is not engaging or does not align with their interest or learning style.
3. PRECONCEIVED NOTIONS
Preconceived notions or biases can hinder effective listening. Learners may filter information based on their existing beliefs, which can prevent then from truly understanding and considering different perspectives.
4. LANGUAGE BARRIER
Language difficulties, including limited proficiency or unfamiliar vocabulary can impede understanding and hinder effective listening.
5. LACK OF TRAINING AND INSTRUCTIONS
Some learners may simply lack necessary training or instructions on how to develop and improve their listening skills , resulting in subpar listening abilities.
It is very important for educators and learners themselves to recognise these factors and work towards developing strategies and techniques to overcome poor listening habits and improve listening skills.
